Benjamin Jordan - Sound Engineer and Foley Artist

Benjamin Jordan is a screenwriter/filmmaker based in Ayrshire, Scotland. In addition to his screenplays he has written during his studies at The University of the West of Scotland Benjamin has worked as primarily in sound and editing for many of film projects, both independently and as part of a crew. While his main passion is screenwriting for the fiction drama, Benjamin has adapted his skills of filmmaking within sound recording and design and uses his experiences both on-set and in post-production to expand his knowledge of the specific industry.

Jordan edited his first major short film ‘Non Compos Mentis’, in 2024. The film was a blended drama of surreal and realism elements from hallucinations to outer-world dream-like environments. focusing on drug addiction, grief and Scottish identity.

Jordan made his director debut with ‘Barnstormer’, in 2025, a short documentary film which follows boxing coach Omar Tumi and his aspirations on coaching the next generation of fighters within Ayrshire, Scotland. For the film Benjamin was a sound recordist on-set, in addition to editing and providing the sound design in post. The film used sound, recorded from the boxers and the coaches, to create a tense but exciting atmosphere for the audience.

For his most recent short film ‘Dying for Love’, in 2025, Benjamin was the sound recordist and sound mixer/foley artist. Benjamin’s primary job was enhancing and mixing all the dialogue within the film, with the addition of sfx and soundtrack. The role of foley artist in particular was a keen interest in Benjamin, having to create unique sounds for the film from scratch in creative and unusual ways, such as a dead body falling out of a closet – a combination of raw meat getting smacked, hitting a leather jacket and the rattling of wooden doors and plastic hangers. Dying for Love is currently being shortlisted for two film festivals.

Ellie Hodgson - Sound Designer, Foley Artist/ Recording Engineer

Ellie is a fourth-year filmmaking student and before the start of this year and this module, had little to no experience working on sound post-production. Most of her experience in sound was being a sound recordist, boom operator and location mixer on short films. Ellie had a little foley experience from previous films I had worked on.

"During my final year of BA Filmmaking and Screenwriting I decided to dedicate all my work to sound design and learning more about audio post -production. Choosing the module Music, Film& Sound Aesthetics seemed the perfect class for me to learn about this and gain experience collaborating with music students who have more knowledge than I do in this area of sound. Before the start of this year, Ellie had never used a DAW, and decided to download Logic Pro to use for this module and for Creative Research Project where she would be working on 2 short films as Sound Designer editing and mixing all audio. She decided to take on the role of foley artist, recording engineer and sound designer."

Everyone acted as sound designers in different ways, so this was a role we all took part in differently. Ellie also ran the Foley session on Logic Pro which she would later hand over to Adam who was running the final session.

Kirsty Quin - Music and Live Performance

IMG_1898.jpeg

Kirsty Quin is a singer/songwriter from Glasgow and has been a student of University of the West of Scotland since 2023.

Spending most of her life studying Musical Theatre the choice to take part in this task made sense as she has always had a love for performing on stage and on screen. This module gave her the opportunity to delve deeper into the process of making music for a short film and learn the process in a practical way as a part of a group.

Focusing mainly on songwriting, live recording and vocal tracks on the film, this allowed her to combine her previous knowledge of performance whilst being given the opportunity to expand her knowledge on the technical side of music with learning the process of using logic for home recording.

Kirsty has released two singles via spotify and other streaming services in 2024, and will use the knowledge gained from this project to further her creative development.

As a team, we made sure to be able to keep in contact with one another by creating a WhatsApp group chat so as to share any ideas, questions or concerns with each other or to update if anyone happened to miss a meeting. Also to plan any live recordings or foley sessions.

This was effective as we all worked closely together in our respective groups and allowed for the final product to flow easily and make the most sense, as we all were confident in our shared vision of the project.
